Work Like It’s Worship: Living Missionally Right Where You Are

You see the blog post or the small group study on Wednesday night, but what you don’t see are the late nights of study, the scattered notes across my desk, and the quiet prayers asking God, “Is this what You want me to share?” Sometimes ministry prep feels like work—digging, writing, organizing—but when I pause, I remember: this is worship too. Every word I type, every outline I make is an offering to Him.

And it’s not just ministry. I also work a full-time job—one that might not be labeled “ministry” at all. But I’ve learned that even there, my work can be worship. My attitude, my integrity, the way I interact with coworkers—all of it reflects Christ. In those ordinary moments, I get to be His salt and light.

Paul reminds us in Colossians:

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23–24)

That one word—whatever—changes everything.

Work as a Calling, Not Just a Paycheck

Your work, whether paid or unpaid, is part of your calling. Cooking meals, leading teams, mowing lawns, changing diapers, writing reports, serving in ministry—all of it can be sacred when we reframe it as worship. What if we stopped dividing our lives into “spiritual” and “ordinary” and simply decided to do it all for His glory?

Integrity That Speaks Louder Than Words

I think about the quiet power of integrity. No cutting corners. No gossiping about the boss/coworkers. No exaggerating on timesheets or “forgetting” commitments. When you and I choose to work with honesty and diligence—even when no one’s watching—we’re telling the world something about the God we serve. Our actions become a testimony, not just our words.

Paul puts it this way in 1 Thessalonians 4:11–12 (TPT): Aspire (make it your driving ambition) to lead a calm and peaceful life as you mind your own business and earn your living (keep your covenants and promises), just as we’ve taught you. By doing this you will live an honorable life, influencing others and commanding respect of even the unbelievers. Then you’ll be in need of nothing and not dependent upon others.”

Mission Right Where You Are

Here’s the beautiful part: you don’t have to pack a suitcase or fly overseas to live missionally. Mission begins right where you are—at your desk, in your home, in your classroom, at your neighborhood grocery store. The way you respond to a difficult coworker, the patience you show with a child, the kindness you offer to a stranger…these are the everyday places where the light of Christ shines brightest.

Sometimes the greatest witness isn’t a sermon but a life lived faithfully, consistently, with love.

When we work with integrity and love, we give others a glimpse of Jesus right where we are. Our actions—how we serve, speak, and respond—can reflect His heart far more than our words alone.

If you’d like to explore this idea further, read Glimpse of Jesus: Making Him Known Through Our Actions — a reflection on how everyday moments can reveal Christ’s love to those around us.

Walking It Out

This week, try reframing one everyday task as worship. Pray before you begin, dedicating it to the Lord. Ask Him to help you bring joy, kindness, or encouragement into that space. Watch how your perspective shifts when you remember: you’re not just working for people—you’re working for Christ.

My Prayer for You

Lord, thank You for entrusting us with work—seen and unseen. Help us to approach every task with a heart of worship. Let integrity mark our choices, joy infuse our efforts, and Your light shine through us in the everyday places we live and serve. May we work as if we’re serving You alone, and may our lives draw others closer to You. Amen.

To help you live this out, I’ve created a free “Work Like It’s Worship” journal page you can download and use this week.
It includes reflection questions, a short devotional prayer, and a few practical steps to help you reframe your everyday work as worship. Whether you’re at home, at your job, or serving in ministry, take a few quiet moments to write, pray, and invite God into your work.
