James 5:7–12
As we come to the closing verses of James, his tone shifts a bit. It’s less instructional and more like a steady, grounding reminder about living life on purpose:
Stay patient.
Stay steady.
Stay true.
Not flashy. Not complicated.
But not always easy, either.
Most of us are walking through something that requires waiting, endurance, or restraint.
When we live life on purpose with intention, we realize that how we live in these seasons is not just about us. The way we live reflects Him.
Let’s look at this one step at a time.
Be Patient… Even When It Feels Slow
“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth…” (James 5:7, ESV)
A farmer doesn’t plant seeds and expect a harvest the next day.
There’s waiting.
There’s trust.
There are unseen processes unfolding beneath the surface.
And that’s where many of us find ourselves.
We’ve prayed.
We’ve obeyed.
We’ve taken steps forward.
And now… we’re waiting.
Not forgotten.
Not dormant.
Just in a season where growth is happening in ways we can’t yet see.
James says, “Strengthen your heart” (James 5:8).
Not your schedule.
Not your plan.
Your heart.
There’s been a recent season in my life when this has felt very real.
I found myself in a situation where I had done what I felt was right. I had shown up, offered help, and stepped in with a sincere heart. Instead of things moving forward as I expected, it felt like everything stalled. In fact, I didn’t just feel my help was rejected. I felt personally rejected.
There was silence where I expected a response.
Distance where there had once been closeness.
If I’m honest, it wasn’t just the waiting that was hard… it was what the waiting stirred up in me.
Questions.
Hurt.
A quiet sense of rejection that caught me off guard.
I found myself replaying conversations, wondering if I had missed something or said something wrong.
In that space, I had a choice.
I could keep trying to fix what wasn’t mine to fix… or I could pause, trust, and let God strengthen my heart in the hard.
Not rush the outcome.
Not force a response.
Not let frustration quietly spill over into other relationships.
Just stay steady.
I’m still walking that out.
But I’m learning that when I remain faithful in the waiting… trusting Him… it not only impacts me but also allows me to shine His light and make Him known.
Because patience isn’t passive. It’s a quiet strength that surrenders our timeline and trusts His.
Stay Steady with People
“Do not grumble against one another…” (James 5:9)
Waiting has a way of showing up in our relationships.
When we feel stretched, tired, or uncertain, it’s easy for frustration to spill onto the people around us.
A short comment.
A quick reaction.
A little irritation that didn’t used to be there.
James gently warns us… don’t let your pressure turn into misplaced frustration.
Instead of grumbling, we pause.
We remember that others may be facing their own unseen struggles, too.
And we remember… how we respond in these moments reflects the One we represent.
This is where living on purpose takes root, being intentional in the smallest moments…
how we respond, how we speak, and how we choose grace over irritation.
Look at Those Who Endured
James points us to the prophets and to Job.
People who didn’t just talk about faith… they lived it through long, difficult seasons.
They didn’t always understand what God was doing.
They didn’t always see immediate results.
But they stayed.
They trusted.
They endured.
And James reminds us:
“…you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.” (James 5:11). That’s what we hold on to.
Not just the outcome… but the heart of God in the middle of it.
He is not distant.
He is not indifferent.
He is compassionate and merciful… even in the waiting.
And when we choose to trust Him in those places, we begin to reflect that same compassion and steadiness to others.
Speak Simply. Speak Truthfully
“Let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no…” (James 5:12)
No exaggerating.
No overpromising.
No complicated words to try to manage perception.
Just honesty.
Consistency.
Integrity.
Living life on purpose isn’t only about the big decisions.
It’s about being trustworthy in everyday conversations.
What we say matters.
And how closely our words match our actions… that matters too.
Because when our words are steady and truthful, they point beyond us… to a God who is faithful and true.
Living with Purpose: Walking It Out
Purpose isn’t always found in big, visible moments.
Sometimes it looks like:
Waiting without losing heart.
Responding with grace when you’re stretched.
Speaking truthfully when it would be easier not to.
And underneath it all… surrender.
Choosing His way over our way.
His timing over our timeline.
His Kingdom over our comfort.
It is steady faith.
It is lived-out obedience.
This is how we make Him known… not just in what we say, but in how we live.
And even now, in that place where things once felt stalled… I’m still choosing to stay steady, trusting that God is doing more than I can see.
Putting it into Practice
This week, keep it simple:
- Notice where you’re waiting.
Instead of pushing harder, ask God to strengthen your heart in that place. - Pay attention to your responses.
When you feel pressure rising, choose pause over reaction. - Speak clearly and honestly.
Let your words be steady, truthful, and aligned with your actions.
And in all of it, ask yourself:
Is the way I’m living in this moment pointing back to Him?
