Not my favorite condiment.

I’m more of mayo girl.

Anyone else?

But I’m guessing the point the Lord was trying to make is not really what we all like on a burger.

Most of us have heard the scripture(s) that speak of a mustard seed but if you haven’t let me share one with you from the book of Matthew.

“He (Jesus) replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

A mustard seed. That’s it.

That’s the amount of faith Jesus says we need, and NOTHING is impossible.

~not a reconciliation of a broken relationship ~not the healing of a body ~not the redemption of a lost child ~not ______________(fill in the blank).

NOTHING is impossible.

Have you seen a mustard seed? It’s tiny.

Did you know the average size of a seed is 1–2 millimeters, about .05 inch. That minuscule seed can grow into a 3–6 feet high plant, which is cool. But here’s a really cool God design!

This tiny .05 seed, under certain conditions, can grow to be about 10–15 feet high or more, and just as wide!

Note what it says, “under certain conditions”. As these seeds grow into plants and trees, they can survive on fewer than 8 inches of rainfall per year. Here’s a thought to ponder…is our faith unwavering when we go through seasons of little rainfall?

In Luke 17 the apostles and Jesus are having a conversation about forgiveness, when they say to the Lord, “increase our faith!”.

Jesus didn’t just say ‘ok fellas here ya go.’

He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, be uprooted and planted in the sea and it will obey you.”

Why? Because the amount of faith isn’t as important as the genuineness of it, for when our faith, tiny as a mustard seed takes root, it has the power of the Lord behind it and can grow.

So, what is biblical faith that we want to plant and grow? Hebrews 11:1, tells us. “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

If you’re a definition person like me, you’ll love these.

~Confidence is defined as ” belief that one can rely on someone (God); have firm trust in.”

~Assurance is defined as “a positive declaration intended to give confidence; a promise (from God).”

Today let’s remember our faith doesn’t have to be as big as a mountain. Our faith can be as tiny as a mustard seed and be beautiful in its genuineness, having the strength thru Christ to tell a mountain to move no matter what the situation or circumstances may look like.

This picture, thanks to the internet, shows it well. I picture that being Jesus’ fingers holding the seed to show us, “look here my sweet daughters (and sons), this seed is just the beginning.”

Lord, thank you for teaching us, for showing us to put our faith in You, despite what we see or feel. Help us to rely on Your power and not our own ability. When our faith needs rain, I pray that Your word would refresh us, when our faith needs courage, I pray Your word would embolden us. May our faith, confidence and assurance in You and Your truth be evident in our words and actions. In Jesus Name. Amen.
